8 in a Million

One million people have applied to go to the moon. Eight of them will be able to go. That’s a one in 80,000 chance of being noticed, then chosen.

80,000

There were 80,000 people at the first concert I ever went to… War Child benefit in the year 2000 in my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. A pretty epic first concert experience if you ask me. The Tragically Hip headlined, a Canadian treasure that anyone would’ve been lucky to have seen live.

How do you shine bright in a crowd of 80,000 people? I wish I could ask the late, lead singer Gord Downie how he did it. (Learn more about Gord’s legacy fund here.)

First and foremost, I must be myself and be true to myself in this process, no matter how long or short it may be. This will require opening up and becoming vulnerable which is quite scary, but also exciting.

They (the good people at dearMoon PROJECT) are essentially asking what my passion project is and how I can make society better by going to the moon…

Those are big questions for someone like me, who has taken the last year off of work to grow in general as a person and pay close attention to my mental health. With COVID-19 happening, I’ll be honest I’ve been pretty idle staying at home most of the time. Always dreaming big though. I have reached many of my mental health and personal goals.

My goal/project/activity I am working on now is connection through sharing my health and happiness journey. Connecting with anyone and everyone via social media and hopefully this blog. I desire to inspire. (And I literally wrote that in my submission to dearMoon lol) It sounds cheesy, but if you take a look at the world we live in, it’s common and it’s achievable to motivate others through social media. My story so far is one of strength and resilience, and at the ripe old age of 36 it’s only just begun.

This blog and my Twitter handle may be new, but I have been blogging for 22 years, since I was a teenager learning how to navigate Adobe GoLive 4. I keep those old blogs private, as they were recklessly written and do not reflect the way I look at my life today.

Living with mental illness as I do is far from easy, but I am still able to achieve my goals when I work hard for them. Sometimes those goals change along the way, but that is usually a pretty positive thing as it helps to learn what one really wants from life.

Have you ever heard that quote, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” (I don’t know who said it, when I looked it up I got multiple answers.) That is quite literally what I am aiming for. If I can make it to the moon, it would prove anybody can do anything despite their disabilities. If I don’t make it to the moon, I will still be celebrating all the little wins along the way.

I would love it if you would join me on this mission, please follow me on social media and share this blog if your heart so desires. I really hope to connect with you on my way to the moon.
